“A lot of people have impressions that we’re the old dog catchers,” Diaz said. “Our job is to make sure animals are safe. I’m going to do whatever I can to make sure I can get them into good homes.” - Officer Diaz, from a goskagit.com interview by Adam Rudnick

"In 2009 there was a 7% increase in equine related calls and a 38% increase in the amount of horses removed for criminal reasons.  Money to care for the horses has been depleted." - Officer Diaz, Skagit County

Loui upon arrival into the program.

Loui June 2011!
June 2011:  Loui is 11-12 month old Azteca gelding. He is a sweet natured, willing to learn fella who needs a place to call home. He was starved and worm infested when he was seized from his previous owner.  Loui has come out of his shell quite a bit. He was pretty timid at first, but with the love of his foster homes he has learned to trust humans rather than fear them. Loui does know how to lunge, stand for the farrier, bath and he loads like a champ.

Shaffar is a beautiful Arabian cross pinto colt. Shaffar is the colt of Penelope. He was born a month and a half after she was removed from the owners who starved her. Despite his mom’s condition Shaffar was foaled quite healthy. The first pic is the day he was foaled, he was brown and white, the second is a pic from 10/10, he is turning into a grey and white pinto.
Update 5/6/2011 - Shaffar received another trim yesterday.  He is growing very quickly and is a very good boy.

Helona is a 10 year old appaloosa mare. Her foster home has done a great job working with her, she has had extensive ground work done with her. She is green broke under saddle. Helona was pregnant when I seized her along with six other horses. She had her colt “Asher” in May of 2010. Helona would be a great project horse for someone with a bit of knowledge.

Char is 16 year old ½ appy, ½ mustang. Char does not know a whole lot, she is friendly, and knows how to lead, and she stands okay for the farrier. Char wants to be your friend but is a little nervous. Char will need an experienced kind handler.

Ollie when he came in.

Looking for a great kids horse? Here he is! 24+ year old Quarter Horse gelding with the sweetest attitute! He does have a bit of arthritus in his left knee but it doesn't seem to slow him down.
Ollie June 2011: He is doing great! He just needs that wonderful home to love him the rest of his days.

Kaia the day she was seized.
After several hours of being "cowboy'd" her owners decided to tie her up inside an arena with all of her tack still on, and a chain through her mouth.Terrified, she stood tied to the wall with the saddle under her belly and cinched around her flank for three days. Animal Control was finally contacted and she had to be sedated to get the saddle off.

Kaia June 2011:
Now she is in foster care and doing great. She was very traumatized by the event, her foster home is trying to regain her trust in humans.  6 years old, beautiful movement, around 15 hands.

Hope April 2011:
Hope was removed from her owners January of 2011. She is still in Rehab as she was emaciated.  She is gaining weight and her hair is growing back.
